Swiss sociologist Bernard Crettaz initiated the first Cafés Mortels in Switzerland in 2004 and this became the catalyst for the global Death Cafe movement. After reading about Crettaz's cafe, Jon Underwood, a former council worker, decided to hold an event in his living room in Hackney, London, UK, and from there it has become a global phenomenon.
